They are the house gnomes of German-speaking folklore — small, shy and busy. Here in Switzerland every child grows up with the tale.
They came at night and did whatever nobody else wanted to do. Kneading dough, sewing seams, tidying up. By morning it was all finished — the baker, the tailor and the carpenter only had to be good at their craft.
Then the tailor’s wife scattered peas on the stairs, hoping to catch a glimpse of them at last. They never came back.
We think it is high time they returned. Today’s Heinzelmännchen are called AI — and they do not take your work away, only the tedious part.
